Famous Economics Majors

Economics as a Major

What is economics?

What do economists do?

What skills will I acquire?

How do I major in economics?

1)       CHANGE IN REQUIREMENTS FOR LIBERAL ARTS EMPHASIS

ECON 4177 – History of Economic Thought – is no longer a required course for Economics majors on the liberal arts track.  In place of ECON 4177 you will substitute any economics course on the 3000-4000 level.  Effective immediately, your required courses for the LIBERAL ARTS track are:

·         ECON 3112       Econometrics

·         ECON 3122       Intermediate Micro

·         ECON 3123       Intermediate Macro

·         MGMT 3160      Business Communications

·         Completion of a declared minor outside the College of Business

·         And FIVE (5) upper level economics electives.

The Business Admin track has not changed.

2)       ECON 4177 WILL NOT BE OFFERED IN SPRING 08

We will NOT be offering ECON 4177 History of Economic Thought, in Spring semester 2008, and there are no immediate plans to offer the course in future semesters.  This means it will not be available as an option for satisfying an economics elective.

3)       SATISFYING “W” WRITING INTENSIVE REQUIREMENT

As you know, ECON 4177 was designated a writing intensive course, qualified to satisfy your in-the-major W requirement.  As we will no longer be offering the course, you must satisfy your W requirement some other way.  MGMT 3160 Business Communication will be counted as your in-the-major W requirement, and you will need to make sure you have one outside the College of Business.  If you transferred in an associates degree, your entire writing intensive requirement is satisfied with MGMT 3160.  Many of you already have a W course outside.  If that is the case, you are fine.  If not, you will need to find a “W’ course outside of the College of Business to satisfy this requirement.   If you aren’t sure whether you have had an outside W course, check your online transcript.  You should see a “W” after the course name. Of course, if you already took ECON 4177 it will still count as a W course for you.

 4)       SCHEDULE FOR INTERMEDIATE MICRO AND MACRO

For the first time this semester (Fall 07), we have offered both ECON 3122 Intermediate Micro and ECON 3123 Intermediate Macro.  Both courses will again be offered in Spring 2008.  Please note, however, that we will go back to the original offering schedule in Fall 2008, offering ECON 3122 Intermediate Micro only in Fall semester, and ECON 3123 Intermediate Macro only in Spring semester.  Please plan your schedules accordingly.

If you have questions about any of these changes, as always feel free to contact me or come by.

Why Minor in Economics?

Economics is an essential tool for understanding the complexities of modern society. Economics analyzes how people with limited resources make choices and how we might make better choices. It is an extremely flexible and marketable minor. Whether your primary interest is in business, communications, policy, data management, international studies, or engineering, a minor in economics can give you an additional edge in the workplace.
