Ph.D. in Business Administration

The Ph.D. in Business Administration is a full-time research-oriented program, designed to prepare graduates for academic teaching and research careers. The program includes core courses covering all business disciplines, combined with in-depth study in both theoretical and empirical aspects of finance. Students admitted to the finance program minor in economics will complete a research methods sequence in mathematics. Students also will teach undergraduate courses to receive training in pedagogy. Graduates will be qualified for tenure-track professor positions at both national and international research and teaching universities and other educational institutions.

The Belk College of Business began offering a Ph.D. in business administration in the fall of 2006. UNC Charlotte is now one of only three universities in North Carolina that offers degrees in business administration at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level. (Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill share the distinction.)

The new Ph.D. in Business Administration initially offers one major, in finance; additional majors may be added as the program grows. Faculty from the departments of Finance, Economics and Mathematics will teach in the program.

Admission requirements and curriculum information for the Ph.D. program are available at www.belkcollege.uncc.edu/phd/.

Research Resources and Facilities

The Belk College and UNC Charlotte offer excellent research resources and facilities. The College either has or is acquiring the following financial systems and databases: the Wharton Research Data System (WRDS), CRSP, Compustat, Execucomp, Bloomberg, and DataStream. In addition, The Belk College has recently installed a state-of-the-art financial trading room. Two Sun servers provide support for both individual research and for the trading room. UNC Charlotte also maintains a grid supercomputing system which is available to students studying in the program.
