ACADEMIC PROGRAM Links

Because of the major presence and sophistication of the real estate and financial service industries in Charlotte , there is a need for practical and academic research on real estate topics of concern to the real estate community. Additionally, there is a growing regional demand for employees with graduate level education in real estate finance and development. Specifically, highly-trained employees are needed for positions in appraisal, brokerage, lending, consulting, market research, development, financial analysis and capital markets.

To meet these needs, UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte real estate and financial services community have endowed and established the Center for Real Estate at UNC Charlotte which is part of the Belk College of Business. Dr. Steven Ott, who holds the John Crosland Sr. Distinguished Professorship in Real Estate and Development, is the Director of the Center. This professorship was also endowed by members of the regional real estate community.

To draw upon the expertise of the community, Dr. Ott has formed advisory boards for the educational and research activities of the Center, both of which are comprised of business leaders within the real estate industry. The advisory boards' participation in the activities of the Center, and their contributions both inside and outside the classroom, will serve to enhance not only the research and educational activities of the Center, but also the student's educational experience and career opportunities. The resources for the Center for Real Estate will primarily facilitate the educational and research activities of the students, faculty, and regional real estate practitioners.

The general objectives of the Center area as follows:

  • Facilitate and fund practical and academic research on real estate topics of concern to the real estate community
  • Market the real estate program
  • Facilitate student classroom and internship learning and student research in real estate Create additional real estate courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Facilitate professional and executive education in real estate
  • Provide scholarships to students to encourage the professional study of real estate

The major educational activity of the Center for Real Estate involves operation of the real estate finance and development concentration at the MBA level. The educational objective of the concentration is to combine the general graduate level business education provided by the MBA program with courses that specialize in real estate. Real estate courses taken within real estate concentration will be designed to develop the student's analytical and technical competence as well as provide them with a solid understanding of the real estate process. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide students with the educational foundation and skills necessary to become managers and leaders within the real estate industry.
