Anyone involved with student advising in any way has to know what Jack Hogue meant not only to the Belk Business College but also to this University.  When I first started in the College of Engineering, I paid several visits to Jack's office along with numerous phone calls trying to emulate the best advising practices around this campus. Under Jack's leadership, the College of Business has streamlined advising processes that our College was also able to adopt.  It was good to have a seasoned administrator here on campus in the area of student advising where I could bounce questions off from time to time.

My heart goes out to many around UNC Charlotte at this very sad time.

I so appreciated Dr. Hogue's commitment to the Students in Free Enterprise and Business Honors program.  It was my pleasure to work with him in a small way as a presenter and a shadow-sponsor.  I had just received the letter from Dr. Hogue asking about my participation for this year.  So quickly life passes. My thoughts are with his family.  He will be sorely missed.

I did not really know Dr. Hogue but saw him quite often in the Registrar's Office, when I worked in that dept., and I also worked with him at numerous graduations. He brought chocolates to our office each Christmas as a gesture of appreciation which is something few people do but he was that kind of person. When he came by the lines at graduation and said get in line, boy did they get in line. It was so easy to work with him. Everyone respected and admired him and he will be so missed at UNC Charlotte. We have lost a great man.

I extend my deepest sympathy to his family and pray for you during this time of sorrow.

With deepest sympathy,

Our prayers will continue to be with the Hogue Family and all those who knew Jack and benefited from his presence here on Earth. God Bless.

My condolences to the University on the news of Dr. Hogue. I knew him since the 80's while an undergraduate, and on the day of his passing, received his invitation to speak again at the SIFE sponsored Career Day. He was a good man, and we are fortunate to be able to remember him for his success in bridging the relationship between students' academic life and the business world.

I was devastated to learn about the passing of Dr. Hogue. Dr. Hogue was truly one of the "above and beyond" faculty at the Belk College of Business who remained approachable to students and always had time to provide course and career advising when needed, even on an impromptu basis. He helped provided a value-added experience for students he was actively involved in recruiting visiting speakers to the department. He was also instrumental in establishing the College of Business Peer Advising program of which I was privileged to be a part this was just a tiny example of how connected he was to the students in the business program.

He was highly respected, and will be greatly missed by, his students. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Jack had a part in interviewing me when I came to UNC Charlotte almost three years ago.  That was the first of many times that I would interact and work with him.  His dedication to excellence and students was apparent in every conversation.  UNC Charlotte will miss him greatly and so will I!  To his family – please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and I extend my deepest sympathies.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Dr. Hogue. I met him when I was a student. He cared very deeply about his work and the students, and it showed.

My friend called me today to let me know of Dr. Hogue's death.  This has made me want to stay in touch with the entire University better.  Dr. Hogue and I shared lunch together about 2 months ago.  He was so good about staying in touch with his students.  I have a letter in front of me regarding participation in the SIFE Business Career Day that he sent June 28, 2005. He was extremely instrumental in the success of my college career and now as I am working in commercial real estate. He was my advisor from my sophomore to senior year.  He allowed me to become very active in the Business Honors Program (BHP) through chairing committees, including the Executive Shadowing program he started, and working on the Business Symposium. These programs helped to shape my understanding of the business community and allowed me to network while still in school, all leading  to a full-time position upon graduation with a company I shadowed while in the BHP.

His ministry was to work with young people, guiding them to make the right decisions in school and helping to prepare them to make a difference in the world through business. He was very instrumental in my life and will be greatly missed. My prayers go out to his family, the staff and students of the University.

Sincerely,

There is not an easy way to summarize all the great things Dr. Hogue did for me and for the students of the Belk College. He was a mentor, professor, advisor and friend. The encouragement and advice that he gave always came from the heart, with the intention of helping us to realize bigger dreams. His wealth of ideas and energy served as an inspiration for all students.

I worked for Dr. Hogue from my sophomore year to graduation, in addition to participating in the BHP. His leadership style with work and BHP allowed me to gain a better understanding of the business world and life in general. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Sincerely,

Dr. Hogue was a true inspiration at UNC Charlotte.  I first encountered him when I transferred to UNCC my sophomore year and joined the BHP.  Throughout my college career at UNCC, I had many more opportunities to work with Dr. Hogue including participating on the board for the Undergraduate Business Symposium. I was always so impressed and appreciative of the time and energy Dr. Hogue invested in his students. The experiences I had with Dr. Hogue and the BHP, greatly enhanced my life both during college and after. My thoughts and prayers are with the Hogue family and the UNC Charlotte family as they go through this difficult time. UNCC and the world have lost a wonderful person.

Sincerely,

Dear Ones,

I wanted to share with all of you how hard it is to accept the loss of such a great, powerful, caring, determined man. I got the opportunity to work with Dr. Hogue as a member of the Business Honors Program. He had so much passion for what he did in the Belk College and all his life was around as the students. He taught me so much and gave me the guidelines whenever I needed them. We all knew how hard he was working for our benefit to  get the most out of college experience. I remember seeing him last week and the smile that he had on his face is simply unforgettable and will always be cherished in my heart as the last memory of him. We lost a role model,a great dean, professor, friend, educator, husband, colleague and a loving human being with a big heart. Let my prayers be with you wherever you are.

God bless and rest in peace!

Jack Hogue was a great colleague and friend to me.  I always looked forward to his friendly smile and greeting every morning.  He was very well respected and admired by the students for his dedication to them.  All of us will miss him terribly.  His family and friends are in our prayers.

I first knew Dr. Hogue as a student in his 2nd level MIS class back in '92.  He was a skilled teacher.  However, it was a decade later as a professional and lead UNC Charlotte recruiter for Bank of America's Finance Management Associate Program that I saw Dr. Hogue's real strength.  He bridged the gap between the academic and professional world for his students in the Business Honors Program as well as any professor that I have worked with at the university. We have brought in some of our best young interns and associates over the last 4 years based in large part on the recommendation of Jack Hogue.  He cared about his students and truly wanted to see them succeed.  I will miss Dr. Hogue both as a business professional in the Charlotte community and an alumnus of the College of Business.  He made our University a better place.  God bless you, Jack.

I am shocked and saddened by the death of Dr. Jack Hogue.  I admired his dedication to the Business Honors Program and student advising.  I will always appreciate the tremendous support he provided to me as an advisor and the commitment he showed our students.  I will truly miss him.

My prayers and condolences go out to his family.

“Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those the art of living well.”

Aristotle' s words could not have been more apt for a person like Dr. Hogue. It is impossible to articulate what his loss means to the Belk College of Business, UNC Charlotte and to all of us who were blessed to have him as part of our lives. To me Dr. Hogue personified the spirit of leadership, vision, compassion and inspiration.

Among all other things his biggest gift to me was instilling the confidence in me that everything I wished-for was possible if I had the right attitude. As a father figure he was always there to help, but knew when to be firm so that I learn my own lessons. As a guide he set challenges and dared me to achieve them, never once doubting that I will fall short. His unwavering confidence in me has helped me get through numerous nerve-wracking circumstances.

The following phrase sums up one of the biggest lessons of life that I have learned from him - "You are not defined by your feelings but rather by your commitments."

My fondest memory of Jack Hogue will be the great fun he had at the Honors Banquet each year! He sincerely cared about each student, but the honors students were special for him and it showed at those banquets. Clearly he would have liked to have an award for each student, but he really enjoyed being able to pay tribute to those students who had made commitments to the program in addition to their studies. They were family.

Jack had a unique set of skills that made him the perfect Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Students. He could say “no” (which he had to do rather often) and the students understood why he said no and that any other student who made the same request would be treated the same way. Yet, he could inspire students to do more than they thought they could. He always seemed to relish his work and as a Department Chair, he made my job significantly easier. I appreciated what he did for the Belk College and for our department.

Jack was a great colleague and a friend to so many in our College. My sincere sympathies to his family and to all of us – faculty, staff, and students – who will miss him greatly. His shoes will indeed be hard to fill.

We met Jack and Terrie in 1986. Jack was a true professional who, through his dedication and leadership, enabled students to achieve their goals. He did his job fairly and thoroughly, and indeed he cared about all his students' progress.

In his personal life, he was fun and lively, with a warm, generous, and unselfish demeanor.  Above all we will remember him as a wonderful and a caring person. We will miss him dearly.

Cem Saydam (Professor of Operations Management) & Doris Chevalier

Jack was a good friend and a person to be counted on to do the right thing in almost any situation. He cared about his students and about the people around him. I thoroughly enjoyed his company. I always counted him a friend in my six years on the faculty in the Belk College . His dedication helped me be better at what I did. I will be among many who miss him and think of his zest for life fondly.

Best,

"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life." –Chinese Proverb

“Fishing” is what Dr. Hogue taught his students to do. Dr. Hogue gave his students the confidence they needed to succeed and believed in us when we didn't believe in ourselves and what we could accomplish.

Everyone who knew Dr. Hogue will miss him greatly. I never thought I would be able to accomplish so much in my life, but Dr. Hogue showed me that where there is a will, if you want to do something (no matter how big and impossible it may seem) that it is possible to accomplish it. I feel as though there are no words to show how big of an impact Dr. Hogue has made to UNC-Charlotte and the surrounding community. He has done incredible things for our SIFE team as well as BHP and COBA Peers. I will miss him dearly. Jack has inspired a lot of people, including myself.

Thanks for teaching me how to fish, Dr. Hogue. I will never forget that lesson that you have taught me, which is one of the most important lessons in life.

It breaks my heart to think of not working with Dr. Jack Hogue any longer. I am so amazed by his life—both on a professional and personal level. But even more so, I am touched by how Dr. Jack Hogue (or Jack, as we called him in the office) wanted to bring out the best of those around him. Like an agile dancer that takes the lead, he actually allowed the rest of us to be showcased in beauty and grace. I have grown so much under Dr. Hogue's supervision in the Business Advising Center. I will never forget when I interviewed over 4 years ago for an advising position and Jack said that he was a “hands off boss.”  I wasn't certain what that meant and it actually made me nervous at the time. To my amazement, I found that I was trusted in the work that I did 110%. Furthermore, I found that I was allowed to grow and find my own way.

What's interesting is that Jack never stopped giving all of us in the office those coveted words of affirmation for our efforts.  Just last week my fellow co-worker, Kristine Hopkins, and I were meeting with Jack about some upcoming changes in the Business Advising Center. Kristine and I asked Jack what he would like to see in the office and Jack responded with, “I like things just as they are; I wouldn't change a thing.” We chimed back in unison, “We think you're the greatest; you're the best boss ever.” I have actually lost count how many times this type of exchange took place.

Wherever Jack is now, I feel quite certain that he is bringing out the best in those around him.  That was one of his many gifts.

Jack, you will be missed. Here is a poem that goes out to all those that await a meeting with you again someday:

Walking in the garden in the light
Hearing the joyous voice, I'm in flight
A place of pure joy is where I am
Conversing with the Lord, hand in hand
Dear friends and loved ones are here with me
I have a place, working for my Lord
A home now for all eternity
God bless thee until you come to me

My condolences go out to all of the family and friends of such a great man. Dr. Hogue gave so much to all that interacted with him and expected great things from everyone. He showed his students how to find things inside of themselves that they never knew was there. I can honestly say that I am a much better person because of the things that this man taught me.  Someone with so much compassion, heart, and dedication will never be forgotten.

Dr. Hogue was one of the most amazing men I have ever had the chance to meet.  He accomplished more work in one lifetime, then many would hope to accomplish in several lifetimes. I am involved heavily in both the Business Honors Program and SIFE and to see the tremendous responsibility he took on was incredible. He was like a second father to me and I loved him that way. He had the utmost confidence in every student always would see the light even in the darkest situations.

Dr. Hogue was a role model, a teacher, and most importantly a great friend. It is impossible to replace such a man and we can only hope to push forward and make due with this trick hand that was dealt to us. I am forever thankful for the time I had to get to know Dr. Hogue and share stories with him. He has left a lasting impact on my life and I am thankful for the great values he has helped to instill in me. We ALL LOVE you Dr. Hogue! Your presence will be missed each and every day. We will miss your humorous laugh and your encouraging statements. Enjoy heaven and we will meet again, when the time comes to be called up.

Dr. Hogue was an inspiration to every student he came in contact with. Through my involvement with SIFE and COBA Peers I spent countless hours with Dr. Hogue. He always unselfishly provided support and advice to our SIFE team. His drive to make a positive impact on the community motivated each of us to do our best to make him proud. Many times I felt inadequate in the work I was doing, but Dr. Hogue believed in me more than I ever could in myself. Dr. Hogue taught me to go after my dreams but more importantly to leave a positive mark on those around me. He was truly a caring man and will be greatly missed.

Life is a precious gift from God! Let all of us cherish it! I used to think that those who do good things will never die. Boy, was I wrong!!! Dr. Jack Hogue was as good as it gets. He inspired me in so many ways and all UNCC students and faculty; alas God has planned a different path for him. He is needed in Heaven to rectify those inhabitants , but I 'm sure he will be watching over us wherever he will be. Sure, we will miss his laughs and his physical presence, but always remember that he is with us in the spirit.

My prayers go to his family and the Belk College. For everyone inspired by Dr. Hogue, don't give up because he is no longer here; instead, work harder to achieve even more. Make him proud because he is still with you.

I met Dr. Hogue for the first time at the end of my freshmen year. It was he who spoke to me about perhaps majoring in Management Information Systems and Operations Management. He encouraged me and advised me several times during my college career. He was such a bright, approachable and kind person. He always helped me get into the classes I needed to enroll in. Despite the fact that he encounters hundreds of students every semester, he never forgot my name. My condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

I was deeply saddened when I heard the news.  I was able to work with Dr. Hogue through the Business Honors Program.  He was the first staff member I met when I visited UNC Charlotte as a senior in high school.  Dr. Hogue encouraged me to apply for the program and all throughout the years I've known him, he has been just as encouraging.  My condolences go out to his family.  He will be missed.

I was fortunate to work with Jack via my job at the Development Office at UNC Charlotte.  He was a passionate advocate for the Belk College of Business, and was always willing to lend a hand in our fundraising efforts. He was diligent, creative, and approachable in each contact had with him.  The world without Jack loses his special sense of vibrancy and humor that were truly his hallmarks.

My condolences go out to his family, his colleagues, and his students who will all miss him dearly.

Colleges are like families. The members of a college work as a team to accomplish their primary objectives of providing outstanding teaching, applied research and service to the community. Jack Hogue contributed to all three, but he will be remembered most for his efforts to help students succeed. He headed up the honors program, sponsored SIFE, advised students and, on more than one occasion, helped them through difficult times. The Belk College family now faces a difficult time, but unfortunately Jack is not here to help us.

We will miss Jack and all he did for the Belk College and the University. There is a rent in the fabric of the Belk College family, and while we will go on striving to ensure that Jack's efforts were not in vain, there will be a void in our lives.

As a Business Honors Program student, Dr. Hogue had a huge impact on my life as an undergraduate student at UNC Charlotte. If I was ever in need of anything, Dr. Hogue would do his best to help me. Dr. Hogue pushed me to succeed and finish the Honors Program. I really appreciate all that he has done for me. He dedicated his life to helping students achieve their potential and often made us realize what our potential was.  Although Dr. Hogue was an excellent advisor and professor, he was an even more wonderful husband. May God bless Terrie and keep her strong! Anyone who knows the Hogues knows a piece of her art or something about her that he loved! Everyone who has suffered a loss in this drastic situation is in my prayers!

Dr. Hogue was an extremely influential person in my life over the past three years. By being involved with the BHP and COBA Peers, Dr. Hogue became a mentor through constantly offering advice or guidance. He strove to inspire students to reach their full potential, to experience the most out of their college career, and to prepare students for life after college. Dr. Hogue initally persuaded me to attend UNC Charlotte, and he has since then been a key factor in my involvement in the Belk College. Words cannot express my gratitude and thanks to such an amazing person. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him and followed under his leadership. We miss you Dr. Hogue!!

As I've read other peoples' comments about Dr. Hogue, I am comforted by the fact that my memories of him are not unique. He made an impact in so many lives. I was a member of the Business Honor Program during its first year when there were only about two dozen students, and I helped to plan the very first Undergraduate Business Symposium. I have visited campus several times since I graduated to participate in Belk College events, and I cannot describe how great it felt to know these programs continue to grow and evolve to help students step out into the business world.

Dr. Hogue was the common denominator. His vision, drive, and constant encouragement motivated me and countless others to achieve. I shared my laughter, frustration, and even tears with him. He always found time to talk with me and and he always helped me to overcome obstacles. I truly feel blessed to have known such a genuine person. Without a doubt, Dr. Hogue played a leading role in my success, then and now. Please keep his memory and efforts alive.

Like many of his colleagues, students, and friends, I will miss Jack! He was most helpful to me when I first joined the Belk College some four years ago, and I felt free to seek his help and advice when I needed them. He was generous with his time, helpful suggestions, and wise counsel.  ack performed his duties with class and dignity. He treated all with a genuine sense of helpfulness and caring. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

I was very sorry to hear about Jack's passing.  He was a wonderful collegue.  Below is the rememberance about him that will be published in the next (September) issue of MIS Quarterly, one of the leading MIS journals.

In Memoriam

It is important to recognize the contributions of Gordon Davis and others who played key roles in establishing institutions in our young discipline. There are countless others whose dedicated efforts to strengthen these institutions go unsung. One of those is Jack Hogue, who was killed in an automobile accident on July 10, 2005. Jack was a Vice Conference Chair for ICIS'99 in Charlotte. ICIS'99 was one of the few ICIS conferences that did not use the services of a conference planner. Jack served that role by negotiating (with Gary Dickson) the contracts for the hotel, overseeing the countless details associated with local arrangements, and gaining generous local sponsorship for the conference and Doctoral Consortium. Everything was always under control when it was in Jack's capable hands. This was also true in Jack's more recent role as Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Student Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I will miss Jack and I regret that I will never again hear his comforting, slow Southern drawl.

My interaction with Jack began over a decade ago, during the time he began work to establish and ultimately bring to prominence the Business Honors Program at UNC Charlotte. He was a consummate professional, dedicated professor, teacher, mentor, advisor, gentleman and dear friend. Through his stewardship of the program, Jack instilled his personal characteristics of professionalism, dedication, social responsibility and personal integrity into every aspect of the BHP. These characteristics enabled the BHP to grow and become a model honors program; indeed, one of the most respected programs of its kind in the nation. The BHP and the countless students whose lives he enriched will live on as a sustainable legacy to his career and to the principles for which he stood. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

I knew Jack for over twenty years as his secretary, but more importantly, as his friend.  I miss him terribly; I can't believe he is no longer with us. Never again will I hear his footsteps as he walked down the hall to go the mailroom. He always stopped to say hello no matter how busy he was. Jack was an incredible person with an endless supply of energy. He did so much for the Belk College of Business and for the Business Information Systems Department. When I began working for the department, Jack had only been a member of the faculty for several months but he was already a very productive researcher.  At that time, the faculty did not have computers in their offices. Jack would give me article after article to type for him and I would think to myself as I was typing, how much more can he write. Jack, I would gladly type for you again if I could.

Goodbye, my dear friend.  God bless you.

Dr. Hogue was such a great man. I still can't believe he's gone. When I received the news, as well as read about it in the paper, I was in shock the whole day. Even at the funeral I couldn't really picture him not being in his office or preparing for the annual rafting trip or doing something else spectacular. Dr. Hogue was one of the reasons I attended UNCC. He made such an impression on my mother and I during our visit that we were both reassured that UNCC was the place for me. He will always be to me a mentor, professor, advisor, and friend. My prayers go out to all of his family, colleagues, students, and friends.

Dr. Hogue was a great influence in my life. Not only was he a terrific mentor to me throughout the 4 years that I attended UNCC, but he was also a good friend. My fondest memories of Dr. Hogue are of the many trips down the Nantahala during the Business Honors Program Retreat. I remember his excitement and enthusiasm as he watched all of the BHP members unite together in one team building activity after the other! We had such a good time! I will always be thankful for those memories. But, even more so, I will always be thankful for the blessing of simply knowing Dr. Hogue. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, and all others who were blessed to know him. He'll always be in our hearts.

Dr. Hogue was one amazing individual. He was funny, smart, ambitious and dedicated to whatever he pursued. Through my involvement in COBA Peers and SIFE I got to know him fairly well. His involvement with all the student organizations showed that he cared for the students, the university and the community. His impact will be greatly missed and is irreplaceable. He will be missed by all that he touched and my prayers are with his family.

Dr. Hogue was an exceptional man, very intimidating upon first meeting.  You knew you were in the presence of greatness, but he was quick to make any student comfortable, and do anything in his power to help.  I visited Dr. Hogue on several occasions; being a transfer, I wasn't always on top of things, but he still took the time to help me right then, right there, regardless of how busy he was.

I was shocked to hear of his death, and I will miss him very much, just as I'm sure everyone will.  He was inspiring, friendly, and a great ally for the students.  I can't imagine this college without him...

My prayers go out to all of his loved ones, and to anyone who was lucky enough to know him.  He will be greatly missed.

As a former student of Jack's (does anyone remember playing MIS Jeopardy in INFO 3130?), I can attest to his teaching ability and concern for the success of all his students.
