Admission Requirements and Application Procedures

All applicants seeking admission into the Belk College Ph.D. program must fulfill the general admission requirements of the Graduate School of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Additional requirements for admission into the program are listed below.

  1. A baccalaureate or master's degree in Business, Economics, or a related field such as mathematical finance, mathematics, or physics with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. In the case where an applicant holds a master's degree a minimum GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale on all graduate coursework is required.
  2. A GMAT score of at least 650. The Belk College anticipates that most applicants that are admitted will have GMAT scores of 700 or higher. Although the GMAT is the preferred exam, the program will accept GRE scores in lieu of GMAT sores provided that the applicant scored at least 700 on the quantitative section of the and at least 500 on the verbal section.
  3. For non-native speakers of English that do not hold degrees from a U.S. university, a score of at least 220 on the computer-based TOEFL, a score of at least 557 on the paper-based TOEFL, or a score of 85% on the MELAB is required. Non-native speakers of English may be required, at the discretion of the Graduate School or the Program Director for the Ph.D. in Business Administration, to enroll in ESL courses at the English Language Training Institute.
  4. Three positive letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a former professor.
  5. A statement of Purpose from the applicant explaining their desire to pursue a finance doctorate.

Financial Support

The Belk College anticipates admitting up to five students for the 2006-2007 academic year. The College can offer each student admitted a compensation packaged consisting of a stipend, full tuition remission, and medical insurance (medical insurance is available for dependents at an additional cost). Students are only admitted on a full-time basis.
